Three trash cans were set on fire on May 10th at Matruusinkuja, which is situated in Katajanokka, Central Helsinki.

Maria Lovkova posted about the fires on a Facebook group for the area of Katajanokka, where residents can write about different happenings around the area. Lovkova had her son, her son’s friend, and her son’s dad with her. In her post, she says that the firefighters were called two times.

All of the fires happened during the afternoon within the same housing cooperative. No damage happened outside of the fire bins. The fires did not spread to the buildings.

Helsinki rescue departments fire foreman Niko Vainio says that “the damage remained pretty small since the fires didn’t have time to spread outside of the bins.”

It is still unknown who has started these fires and whether they were intentional or not, but Vainio comments that “In general, it is very unlikely that three rubbish bins burn at the same time on the same day by accident, so it is very possible that the fires were set on purpose”

The firefighters had told Lovkova to call the police if another trash can is set on fire.
