Sapphire Medical Clinic becomes Scotland’s first cannabis medical center to be approved by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS).
Cannabis can be used to treat a multitude of conditions including anxiety, cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, seizures, and Alzheimer’s disease. Medical cannabis was legalised in November 2018, when doctors could start prescribing it to patients.
The clinic was originally supposed to open in Aberdeen but is now located in the city of Stirling. It is easily accessible for those living in the surrounding cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh. The clinic will start operating via virtual appointments on Monday, March 22nd. and will move to face-to-face ones as soon as the COVID-19 restrictions allow it.
For those patients who feel that the cost of the treatment is a barrier, the Sapphire Access Scheme offers affordable consultations to those who are enrolled in the UK Medical Cannabis Registry.
Lisa Quarrell’s (39) eight-year-old son Cole has severe epilepsy and suffered up to 20 seizures a day before being prescribed cannabis oil. His mom told BBC Scotland: "It (the clinic) won't change my situation as my problem now is purely funding or having it accessible through the NHS. However, it will make it easier for desperate parents to gain access to this wonderful medicine.”
She added, "It is a step in the right direction, and it means finally there will be a safe path for scared parents to take."
